Avocado is a tree. Its flowers are greenish-yellow in color. It has a pear shaped fruit weighing around 100 to 1000 g and is called as Avocado fruit. The regional names of Avocado are abacate, avocado pear or alligator pear, butter fruit and cheese pear. Choquette, Gwen, Hass, Lula, Maluma, Pinkerton, Reed, Brogden, Bacon, Fuerte, Ettinger, Sharwil, Monroe, Spiks and Zutano are the varieties of Avocado. The fruit has low levels of cholesterol. A large seed is found at the center. Hence, it is also known as a single-seeded berry. Avocado seeds are used to treat hypertension, diabetes, inflammatory conditions and for improving hypercholesterolemia.
